about
STORY
j.f. Lane grew up in Oregon, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English & Writing before moving to Austin, Texas with her long-term partner and now husband, Jacob. Her story, as she would tell it, is one informed by struggle: with depression, challenging family dynamics, ADHD that went undiagnosed until adulthood, and a sense of lost creative purpose after college. She spent the decade after graduation working to perfect the words of others while she searched for the perspective that would eventually define her own. In 2023, an unexpected loss of employment found her driven to the keyboard once more, where she spent the next 8 months writing The Curse Year. The project reignited her passion for writing and regained the voice she felt she’d lost. Currently in the querying trenches, she looks forward to the day her work meets readers’ hands.
When not writing, she can be found reading, gaming, hiking, and harassing her dog and husband for cuddles.
writing
While j.f. Lane primarily writes fantasy stories, she is greatly influenced by horror and gothic literature. Her stories draw from a wide range of personal experience and fictional influences, including anime, the trickle-down effects of systemic injustice, and her relationship with her eternally supportive husband. She works in mysterious, grimdark worlds with flawed protagonists. She enjoys putting her characters through their paces, forcing them to confront their demons and reconcile the darkness in their pasts to achieve catharsis. Her romantic arcs are earned through shared hardship, understanding, and mutual shortcomings. Traces of feminism, anarchist thought, and calls to resistance can be found throughout her work.
